REMEMBRANCE Sunday was marked with moving services across the Redditch and Alcester areas.

Remembrance day fell on Armistice Day which also commemorated the centennial of the end of the First World War.

At 6am the community of Alcester braved a biting wind and rain to pipe in the dawn at the beginning of one of the most poignant Remembrance Days.

The Remembrance Sunday parade saw High Street full of residents marking their respects as a column of people snaked through the town to the Church Green.

The church service was officiated over by The Rev Adrian Guthrie.

The chairman of the Alcester Branch of the Royal British Legion, Mike Gittus said: "Alcester is special town and I wasn't at all surprised to see such a wonderful turn out to start the day of remembrance in our community. We particularly acknowledged the the pipers role in WW1 where they lead the men into battle and were slaughtered for their bravery."

In Redditch politicians, veterans, and members of the public observed a two-minute silence held across the country and laid wreaths at memorials.

For the second time Redditch had a Chelsea Pensioner among its guests.

Simon de Buisseret was joined by members of 37th Signals Regiment as they marched from the town hall on Walter Stranz Square.

They were joined by the civic party and community leaders for the wreath laying ceremony at the war memorial, followed by a service at St Stephen’s Church on Church Green.

Speaking after the service, Mayor Of Redditch Cllr Juliet Brunner, said: ”It was an honour and privilege to lay a wreath to commemorate the 100th year of the signing of the Armistice. 

”I am delighted that hundreds of people came to pay their respects to the fallen of Redditch.”
