A HEREFORD sporting landmark could be demolished if the city council accept proposals from the City Sports Club, the Hereford Times wrote in May 1995.

The club has submitted plans for the redevelopment of the land on the racecourse which are now being considered by the city council.

Norman Davies, who drew up the plans with City Sports Club chairman Tim Block, said the scheme involved demolishing the 19th century grandstand in Grandstand Road to make way for a new modern building.

He said: “We are also proposing that some of the land should be returned for the council for low-cost housing. The money raised from the sale of the land should be enough to finance the new two-storey building.”

The City Sports Club leases the land from the city council, but Mr Davies hopes that the council would give the club some money for it in recognition for all it has done for sport in the city since it formed in 1946.

Mr Davies said the new building would be more economical.
