A SIX-week project to upgrade old water pipes near Astwood Bank is to begin in early January.

Water and waste company Severn Trent will start the scheme on a section of the B4090 Salt Way on January 7 with a road closure and diversions in place until early spring.

The work, which will replace 1km of water pipes between Edgioake Lane and The Ridgeway, will reduce the risk of burst pipes in the future and ensure a reliable water supply for customers in the area.

Gareth Mead, from Severn Trent, said: “This project is part of a £1.4 million investment into the Redditch area which aims to modernise our water pipes so customers are less likely to face leaks or bursts.

“Water pipes on Salt Way are showing their age and so we want to replace them with brand new ones. The work means that a road closure will be in place to allow our engineers to work safely, but a clearly signposted diversion will be there throughout the work.

“Our customers want water whenever they need it so this work will hugely improve our network, now and for future generations.”

Residents and business owners should have been kept updated on the planned work both through letters and face-to-face meetings.

Full pedestrian and residential access will be maintained throughout, while the diversion around Salt Way will see motorists being directed onto the A441 and B4092.

The scheme is part of Severn Trent’s commitment to investing in its infrastructure which will see the equivalent of £1,300 invested for every home and business it serves between 2015 and 2020.
