A WELCOME sign that spring is on its way, our Camera Club picture of the day, taken by Jen Jones, captures the re-emergence of life.
To the delight of many, great drifts of snowdrops are emerging from their months of perennation across the county, kicking off nature's annual great awakening.
Widely planted to bring early life to our parks and gardens, the non-native ornamental plant, thought to have been introduced from mainland Europe in the early sixteenth century, has become strongly established and naturalised in our countryside, with crops of the nodding white flowers blooming in woodlands, hedgerows and verges countrywide.
Accessible snowdrop hotspots in the county include the National Trust's Weir Gardens, where several different varieties of snowdrop carpet the riverbanks and woodland floor from January to March.
