A DETERMINED young girl who has given up all sweets and chocolate for Lent has raised almost £200 for Primrose Hospice.

Kind-hearted Alice Smith, from The Oakalls in Bromsgrove, has taken on the difficult challenge after “someone really special” was cared for by the hospice, based in St Godwalds Road.

Though the 11-year-old has admitted it has been tough not to give in to temptation, Alice is determined to complete Lent without eating her favourite treats.

Alice said: “I decided to give up sweets and chocolate to try to be healthier and to see if I could do it.

“I also thought I could raise some money at the same time.

“Somebody really special to me was taken care of by Primrose Hospice when they were poorly.”

Alice has already smashed her original target of £50 and is now determined to raise as much money as she can for Primrose Hospice.

She said: “It's definitely been difficult as I have a sweet tooth.

“I haven't given in though as I don't want to let down all the people who have already donated.”

Mum Naomi said: “I was quite surprised when Alice said she was going to give up sweets and chocolate.

“She’s been really determined though, especially as people have been so generous, and I am so proud of her.”

With the end of Lent fast approaching, Alice is already making a list of the first treats she will tuck into after Thursday, April 18.

“I am most looking forward to a double chocolate chip cookie and lots of Easter eggs,” she said.

David Burrell, Chief Executive at Primrose Hospice, said: “This is a wonderful story of a young girl who has shown determination and thoughtfulness throughout Lent and also managed to raise some much-needed money for Primrose Hospice.

“Well done Alice.”
