THE sunshine and blue skies of Friday may have been replaced by clouds and the threat of rain yesterday, but that did not deter the crowds who flocked to Shobdon for the annual Food and Flying Festival.

The popular festival has returned for its 15th year this weekend, with spectacular displays from vintage aircraft including the UK's last Lancaster Bomber.

The two-day event at Shobdon Airfield showcases some of the best local produce as well as raising vital funds for local charities, with more than £100,000 raised since 2004.

Since moving to the airfield six years ago, organisers say aviation is now as much at the forefront of the festival as food.

"We've come a long way since our first Festival in 2005 when we only had a twenty or so exhibitors and a few hundred visitors," Terry Teale said.

"We persevered and last year we welcomed around 7,000 people across the weekend. We are now a well-established part of the Foodie calendar."

The festival continues today, offering visitors 100 food and craft exhibits showcasing food from around the world.

On the flying front, Shobdon's historic airfield, which was built to train glider pilots during the Second World War, will play host to dozens of visiting aircraft from around the country.

Flypasts feature a Spitfire, a Hurricane and the only Lancaster Bomber still flying in the UK.

Today's packed line-up will feature a second flypast, classic vehicles, a display by the Jump4Heroes parachute team, cooking demonstrations by top local chefs, and a performance by the Leominster Morris

Tickets cost £8 for adults, £2 for 5 to 16-year-olds and under 5s are free.
