A FIREFIGHTER from Bromsgrove who helped 'vulnerable' young victims of crime put offenders in jail has been given a special award.
Sophie Newnes received the Chairman’s Certificate of Commendation at Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service's awards ceremony at Worcester Guildhall.
As part of the Positive Role Model (PRIME) initiative in North Worcestershire, Sophie helped young people who had been referred to the service for one-to-one support.
After some confided in her that they were the victims of ongoing criminality, Sophie brought the matter to the attention of police colleagues, giving details of the perpetrators.
She then acted as liaison between the police and the young people to make the process of giving evidence statements easier for them.
Sophie also supported the young people in communicating what had happened to their parents and guardians.
“The perpetrators were brought to trial at Crown Court and received significant custodial sentences,” said Group Commander Rob Allen, as he introduced the award.
“Sophie’s contribution was integral to this process and also brought great comfort to the victims and their families.”
