AN action group is calling on Wyre Forest Council to rethink plans for a junction at the "blind summit" of a railway bridge in Kidderminster.

Chair of the Offmore Comberton Action Group, Councillor Alan Totty, says proposals in the Local Plan for a spine road linking a new development of 1,400 homes to Husum Way will be a "severe accident risk" for cars coming over the nearby bridge.

Cllr Totty said: "Traffic approaching the blind summit of the railway bridge will come to stationary traffic at the traffic lights, which will essentially be a crossroads. It is potentially lethal."

A public meeting was held for neighbours, who also raised concerns about the impact of a parking extension at Blakedown Station on traffic congestion, and the visual impact of a new housing development on residents bordering the site.

The group has submitted a response to the council's Local Plan consultation, which closed on Monday, suggesting that the spine road be linked directly to the planned roundabout at Birmingham Road via a new railway bridge.

Cllr Totty added: "We do not accept arguments that the cost of such a railway bridge would make the proposed development financially unviable for the developers.

"We do not accept that a reduction in shareholders profits can ever be an acceptable reason for accepting a scheme which is so very harmful."

Worcestershire County Council confirmed it had provided feedback on the proposed junction and said it would continue to work with the district council on the emerging Local Plan.

Councillor Fran Oborski, Wyre Forest’s cabinet member for planning, said: “We are grateful for the further comments received from local residents during this period of re-consultation.

"The next stage is for a planning inspector to review our submission documents and set a timetable for our Local Plan to be heard at a public examination.

"Any responses we received during the consultation period will be sent for the planning inspector to consider.”
