A SCHOOL in Kidderminster has closed for the day after a member of staff came into "close contact" with someone who travelled to coronavirus-hit Italy.

ContinU Plus Academy, based in Finepoint Way, was closed today because an employee came into contact with a relative who had returned from Northern Italy and was now self-isolating.

A statement made on the school's website read: "School will be closed today due to a member of staff being in close contact with a family member returning from a trip in Northern Italy who is now in 14-day self isolation as per national guidelines.

"At the CPA, we take our duty of care very seriously.

"Our pupils well being is always paramount."

An update sent out to parents today said the school would reopen tomorrow (Thursday) after a deep clean.

The letter, sent from headteacher Sara Devo, read: "As you are aware the school has been shut for one day, waiting for advice from Public Health England following someone in a member of staff’s family returning from Northern Italy after a Ski trip.

"The school has been in regular contact with Public Health England today in order to ensure that we have clear information and guidance about the situation.

"I can assure you that there are currently no cases amongst staff or students at the ContinU Plus Academy.

"I have also discussed the potential risk to whole school community and established the following from Public Health England: There is no need to prolong the school closure, and following a deep clean school will reopen tomorrow morning."

ContinU Plus teaches around 90 pupils aged 11 to 17 who are unable to attend mainstream education.
