A HIGH-PROFILE Aston Villa footballer who lives in Barnt Green has been charged with driving without due care and attention.

Villa skipper Jack Grealish, 24, was also charged with failing to stop at or report a collision after an incident at Waterside, Dickens Heath, Solihull, on Sunday, March 29.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "An investigation was launched after we responded to reports of a car hitting parked vehicles and the driver fleeing on foot.

"The 24-year-old from Barnt Green, Worcestershire, has been postal charged to appear before Birmingham Magistrates Court on August 25."

The charges were announced just a day after Villa, captained by Grealish, became the first club to host a post-lockdown Premier League game.

Relegation-threatened Villa drew 0-0 with Sheffield United in a game played behind closed doors at Villa Park on Thursday evening (June 17).

Grealish attracted criticism for appearing to flout coronavirus lockdown restrictions in late March, just days after appearing in a video appealing to fans to stay at home.

He later apologised for his actions with a video message on his Twitter account.

Former England under-21 midfielder Grealish was appointed as Villa captain last season.

He led his boyhood club to promotion back to the Premier League with victory over Derby in the Championship play-off final at Wembley just over a year ago.
