REDDITCH United could be poised to make one of the biggest signings in their history after former Premier League star Jermaine Pennant joined up for pre-season training with the club.

Ex-Liverpool, Arsenal, Stoke and Birmingham City star Pennant played in the Reds' midweek 1-0 friendly win over Studley.

And, speaking to the club's Youtube channel after the match, he did not rule out the possibility of turning out at the Trico Stadium on a permanent basis.

Pennant, a one-time Champions League runner-up with Liverpool in 2007, said: "I know the sporting director here and he asked me if I fancied coming down because I've moved back to Birmingham now.

"I thought, 'you know what, let's give it a go' so I've got the boots back out and trained with the boys. They seem like a great bunch of lads.

"We will take it week by week and I'm sure that closer to the start of the season, we can all make a decision."

Capturing Pennant, even at the age of 37, would be a real statement signing from Redditch if they can pull it off, given he cost £6.7m when Liverpool bought him from Birmingham in 2006.

He made almost 250 top-flight appearances for Arsenal, Leeds, Birmingham, Liverpool and Stoke.

In recent years, he dropped down the leagues with Wigan and Bury, then into non-league with Billericay Town - and even appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2018.

Redditch were set to finish bottom of the Southern League Premier Division Central last season but were saved from relegation when the non-league campaign was rendered null and void by the coronavirus outbreak.

David Faulkner has since bought the club, bringing in Wayne Spicer as manager and a host of new signings.
