TONY Gore praised debutant Sam Woodhouse after his goal helped his new Dudley Sports team to victory over Shawbury United in the FA Vase.

The boss said he was very pleased with his side’s “dominating” performance in the 3-1 home win, which sets up another home tie in the next round against North West Counties League Premier Division outfit Hanley Town.

The three Sports goals came through Tony Beyai, Richard Nicholson and Woodhouse, who Gore said “did very well” on his debut.

“Sam took his goal well,” he said. “But I was very pleased with the whole team’s performance. It was a dominating display against a tough team, and I think we controlled the game throughout.

“We could’ve scored more goals, but so they could’ve too, so I think 3-1 was a fair reflection of the match.”

Attention has already turned to this Saturday, with Sports hosting a Wolverhampton Casuals side who are unbeaten in their last four matches.

Gore said: “I watched them play against Tividale and they are a very good side. So we know we will have to be at our very best to beat them.

“We’ve had an inconsistent start to the season, but I think that’s where we are as a team.

“We can compete with most in this league, but there are three or four teams at the top – your likes of Black Country Rangers, Tividale and Casuals – who have bigger playing budgets than we do and are a lot tougher.

“We’re not going to compete with teams who pay £500-800 a week for players. And that’s not a defeatist attitude, I’m realistic and know that the teams with the most money will be the ones who will be going for it.

“We’re just not at that level yet, but we are always looking at improving our squad within the limited budget we have.”

Sports will be without Abdul Ishola for Saturday’s 3pm kick-off against Wolves Casuals after he picked up a shin injury in the victory over Shawbury.
