STOURBRIDGE super welterweight Sam Eggington suffered a surprise defeat as he was stopped by Tanzanian fighter Hassan Mwakinyo inside two round at the Birmingham Arena.

Featuring on the undercard of Amir Khan's clash with Samuel Vargas the pair squared up to each other in front of the Sky television cameras on Saturday evening.

In what most expected to be a routine bout for The Savage, Eggington found himself on the back foot right from the start.

Mwakinyo came out firing, with the unknown 23-year-old handing out a number of punches to Eggington who was pushed up against the corner of the ring.

The popular Stourbridge man took a pummelling from Mwakinyo who did not give in for one-and-a-half rounds, unleashing a flurry of blows.

The hometown hero could provide no answer to his opponent – who looked intent on taking his chance on the biggest stage of his career – before the referee stepped in and called a halt to the fight.

The defeat could prove to be catastrophic for the 24-year-old, who might see hopes of a rumoured contest with American WBO welterweight title contender Brandon Rios fall apart.

The night saw a different night of emotions for Rowley Regis middleweight Jason Welborn who retained his British title after an epic rematch with Tommy Langford.

For a second time, the fight went the distance and Welborn was awarded a split decision victory after 12 absorbing rounds.
