UNLUCKY Lye Town crashed out of the FA Vase after losing 2-1 at former Conference Premier side Histon

Town.

Jack Till had fired Lye into a first half lead when he kept his cool to slot past goalkeeper Sam Roach.

Histon soon levelled when Evan Key bundled the ball home from a Pat Bexfield corner.

And the Eastern Counties League title favourites then took the lead in first half stoppage time when Max York converted from the penalty spot following a rash challenge from Lye's Joe Colley.

The second half was one way traffic as Lye piled on the pressure and they should have levelled when substitute Lewis Worsey crashed an unstoppable shot against the Histon crossbar.

Lye chairman Brian Blakemore said: "We were the better side by far, but we just couldn't get back on level terms.

"We hit the crossbar and the post while having another effort cleared off the line. It just wouldn't go in for us.

"But I was really proud of my players and we were desperately unlucky to say the least.

"Histon just resorted to hoofing the ball from defence to attack. No wonder there was plenty of grass in the middle of their pitch.

"To be fair, Histon were very complimentary after the game and claimed we were the best side they've played this season by some distance - but then it's very easy to say that when you've won.

"They are firm favourites to win the Eastern Counties League having only lost once this season and had won all of their home games until the previous Saturday when they drew.

"They obviously know how to make the most of home advantage.

"The only word I can use to describe the game from Lye's point of view was frustrating because we didn't deserve to lose and there were plenty of positives to take from the game.

"Lewis Worsey hit an absolute thunderbolt and had it been just an inch or two lower, it would have been us going through to the last 16!

Lye return to Midland league action this Saturday when they entertain bottom side Wolves Sporting Community.
