THE BLACK Country’s newest hockey club got off to the perfect start in their first match thanks to two goals from part timer Dave Williams.

The 20-year-old, who is studying at Manchester University, grabbed a brace as the Knights fought back from 2-0 down to snatch victory in a thrilling friendly.

The Knights even lent two players to Kingswinford after they turned up at the newly named Ormiston Sandwell Community Academy in Tividale with just nine men.

But on a sweltering afternoon, the hosts found themselves two goals down at half-time despite dominating play.

Two short corners left rookie keeper Martin Matthews no chance as the visitors went into the break with a clean sheet.

Minutes after the restart skipper Sol Buckner raced down the wing and laid off to Mick Hinton whose cross was drilled into the net by Williams.

The Knights then piled on the pressure looking for the equaliser. The game was then stopped for 15 minutes after David Scotford was taken to hospital with an injured arm after being accidentally struck by a stick.

But the hosts rallied again and Williams finished off a fine move involving Jess Warren and Dave Wilkinson by firing into the net from close range on 62 minutes.

And with three minutes left livewire Wilkinson grabbed the winner firing in a cross from the left hand side. Scotford was treated at hospital for nerve damage in his arm and later released.

Jubilant skipper Buckner said: “It was a very proud day for us. We dominated the game but struggled to make it count.

“But the whole team played their part and to start with a win is just fantastic.

"We must thank our sponsors at The Quality Hotel who have been very supportive. We can only go from strength to strength.”
