NAVY man Wes Khan sailed into Dudley Knights folklore after scoring the goal that earned his side’s first league point in 18 attempts as they drew 1-1 at Aston University.

The 35-year-old tapped home in the second half to set up a nailbiting finish on Saturday.

The Knights went on the attack from the start and should have opened the scoring when Ed Parkes’ reverse stick shot went just wide.

Minutes later Sol Buckner’s goalbound shot was intercepted by Khan who accidentally forced the ball wide.

Stand-in keeper Steve Griffiths then pulled off a fine point blank save on 22 minutes to deny the students.

Half-time came too soon for Buckner’s men who were growing in confidence and starting to boss the game.

However after the break an early defensive lapse let the hosts in and their striker fired past a stranded Griffiths.

But the goal inspired the Knights even more and they pressed hard for an equaliser.

A brilliant move down the right involving Buckner, Parkes and tough tackling Jess Warren set up Khan for a close range tap in on 42 minutes.

The students tried to hit back but could not find a way past a resolute Griffiths, who earned the man-of-the-match award with another fine save tipping over the cross bar.

Despite two short corner attempts and numerous attacks the Knights could not find a winner and had to settle for a deserved draw.

Buckner said: “We had our best chance of a win but had to settle for a draw. And that feels like a win after such a difficult first season. It was our proudest day which we will never forget.”

The Knights welcome local rivals Kingswinford to Earls High School on Saturday for a 2pm derby-day pushback.
