HE'S the guy everyone recognises at Stourbridge's New Inn, with his distinctive red hair, dark glasses and neck scarf.

And now an effigy of George Parkes is destined to end up in a blaze of glory at the pub's charity bonfire night in aid of Mary Stevens Hospice.

Entry to the event, taking place this Thursday (November 2), is free but regulars will be urged to donate a "pound for the George" - in a nod to the traditional "penny for the Guy" - before throwing his lookalike dummy, made by his mother Becky Parkes, on to the bonfire.

George, aged 25, of Witton Street, Stourbridge, who is currently studying for his doctorate in chemistry at Aston University, said: "At first I was a bit bemused that they wanted to throw my effigy on to the fire - but I know it's meant in a fun spirit and it's all for a great cause.

"Mum's done a fantastic job of making the guy to look like me - and I hope people will give generously for the hospice."

The fireworks night will also feature a tombola and the pub, on the corner of Cherry Street and Glebe Lane, is selling raffle tickets to add to the fundraising for the hospice.

And, on November 17, the New Inn is organising an auction, along with drawing the raffle, for the same cause.

Landlady Linda Anslow said: “It’s shaping up to be a brilliant night. I always organise a bonfire as a ‘thank you’ to our customers – and this time it will be even more special as we aim to raise as much as we can for a fantastic cause.

"George is a wonderful guy for letting us burn his image. Let’s hope the whole night goes like a rocket.”

The New Inn event will start at 6pm, with firework shows at 7pm and 9pm.
