A LEGENDARY rock band from the 1990s had Birmingham crowds singing their hearts out as they returned to the city’s stage last Saturday (December 6).
Inspiral Carpets, the iconic band formed in Oldham in 1983 and a key part of the Madchester movement, performed at the O2 Institute as part of their 2025 tour.
Known for hits such as This Is How It Feels and Saturn 5, the group drew fans of all ages for a night of nostalgia and high energy.
The current line-up features original vocalist Stephen Holt, guitarist Graham Lambert, keyboardist Clint Boon and returning bassist Martyn Walsh.
Stephen said: “We love playing in Birmingham and have always had a great reception from the crowd.
“We first played Birmingham in 1989 at The Powerhouse and always try to get back there when we’re touring.
Martyn said: “It was great! A really exciting gig. Hot and sweaty, and the crowd were in great voice - which always helps!”
Both musicians said one of the most striking things on this tour has been the mix of generations in the audience.
“We used to have an older audience, but now we see a lot of parents with their kids, plus teenagers on their own,” Stephen said.
“They’re always at the front, wearing our shirts and hats, and they know all the words.”
Martyn added: “This tour has been a revelation. Not only are parents bringing their children, but we’re seeing groups of youngsters coming along, dancing and singing every word.
"Birmingham most definitely brought the energy we all hoped it would.
"We love you and we'll be back soon!"
