Search the Public Notice PortalA PLANNING application has been submitted to convert part of a former police headquarters in Dudley town centre into a retail unit.
The applicant, who has not been named, is seeking permission to change the use of ground floor flats and a caretaker’s office at the corner of New Street and Tower Street into a shop aimed at residents of the flat and the general public.
The site was previously used as a police station serving the wider area before being converted into residential accommodation three years ago.
The proposed outlines that the retail unit could accommodate a range of uses including the sale of goods, food and drink consumption, professional services or health-related services.
Planning statements submitted with the application highlight potential benefits for residents, particularly those in socially rented accommodation.
The applicant said the retail space would provide “convenient on-site services, improve accessibility and encourage social interaction” within the building and the surrounding area.
The building currently houses 24 flats, including 12 socially rented units, and occupies a prominent position within the town centre’s primary shopping area and conservation area.
According to planning documents, the proposal would involve no external alterations to the building.
The development would use the existing main entrance at the corner of New Street and Tower Street, with a separate access point leading to the residential areas.
Dudley Council will now consider the proposal and make a decision in due course.
