SEDGLEY Library is marking 25 years at its Ladies Walk home with a week of free events celebrating books, local history and community life.
The celebrations centre on Monday, June 29, when deputy mayor Adam Aston will give a short speech and cut a birthday cake at 11.30am, with music from local choir T G Singers and refreshments.
At 2pm, visitors can test their knowledge in a specially themed quiz, 2001: A Library Odyssey.
The programme continues on Tuesday, June 30 at 2pm with local historian John Homer tackling the question Why the Black Country?, followed on Wednesday, July 1 at 11am by Flora and Fauna, a talk from Wren’s Nest Nature Reserve warden Rob Earnshaw.
On Thursday, July 2 at 2pm, bestselling author Miranda Dickinson will talk about romance and mystery in her writing. The following day, Friday, July 3 at 2pm, Elaine Bouckley will run a reminiscence and creative writing session, titled Thanks for the memory – Sedgley Library and round about, inviting people to share and record their own stories.
Professor Black will round off the week on Saturday, July 4 with Music in Mythology, a children’s event at 11am which will also see the launch of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. At 1.30pm, Professor Black returns to explore famous cases of hysteria from around the world.
Library manager Tracy Rollason said everyone is welcome to drop in for the cake-cutting on the Monday, and recommended booking for the other sessions. Sedgley is one of 13 libraries in the borough operated under the Better brand by not-for-profit social enterprise GLL, on behalf of Dudley Council.
Councillor Damian Corfield, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said the anniversary was a reminder of how valued the library remains, from inspiring a love of reading to bringing people together.
Events can be booked in person at Sedgley Library or by calling 01384 812790. Further details are available at www.better.org.uk/library/dudley/sedgley-library.
