A NEW sensory garden designed to bring joy to residents at a local care home has been officially opened by Dudley’s deputy mayor.

Councillor Adam Aston and his partner Ben Middleton cut the ribbon at Netherton Green Care Home’s official opening party, which had a 1940s theme.

The Advinia Healthcare home’s new garden is full of flowers, plants and wildlife, and has been created as a place where residents can luxuriate in the sounds, aromas and sights of nature.

Home manager Fiona Sewera and her team dressed in vintage outfits as they hosted a fun-packed day of music, food and outdoor fun.

She said: “We were thrilled that Councillor Aston and Ben could join us and declare the Netherton Green sensory garden open.

"It's wonderful to have this resource for the residents so they can enjoy spending time outdoors, which is good for the body and the spirit.

"The sensory garden will be particularly beneficial for residents living with dementia as the stimulation it offers is so good for mental wellbeing.”

Singer Chloe Jeens entertained the revellers at the Bowling Green Road home, bringing a 40s flavour to her set by belting out wartime classics.

Guests enjoyed a picnic lunch complete with a cheeseboard and fruit display.

Resident Joe Owen, 82, said: “I really enjoyed the whole day, it was amazing.

"It was really nice mixing with everyone.”

Meanwhile, fellow resident Mary Griffin, 90, said: “I thought the event was well put together and enjoyable.

"It was lovely to talk to Adam as I used to be the deputy mayor in Sandwell, so we had plenty to talk about.”

Advinia Health Care is a network of 36 care homes providing the full spectrum of care services.
