ALL Dudley libraries are taking part in a music‑themed summer reading challenge, titled Read to the Beat, encouraging children aged four to 11 to explore the links between stories and songs.
The national scheme, illustrated by award‑winning author and illustrator Harry Woodgate and backed by artists from Universal Music Group, aims to show how books and music can spark imagination and creativity.
Children who sign up for free are challenged to read six books over the holidays, collecting stickers, then a medal and certificate when they finish.
Across the Dudley borough, libraries are laying on nearly 450 linked activities through the summer.
These include LEGO clubs, coding sessions, craft workshops, storytimes, games clubs and STEM events, with projects ranging from making musical instruments and carnival masks to LEGO Spike coding, badge‑making and gaming afternoons.
Special events include visits from ZooLab at Dudley Library, Professor Black performances at Gornal and Sedgley, RAF STEM workshops in Gornal, a songwriting workshop, creative writing sessions and a finishers’ party in Stourbridge.
Regular Rhyme Time, Baby Time and Storytime sessions and family trails, treasure hunts and craft clubs mean even the youngest children can get involved.
The libraries are run by not‑for‑profit social enterprise GLL under the Better brand.
Councillor Damian Corfield, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “From crafts and coding sessions to storytelling, STEM workshops and special performances, there is something for every child to enjoy. I would encourage families across the borough to visit their local library, sign up for the challenge and make the most of everything on offer this summer.”
GLL partnership manager Stephanie Rhoden said: “Whilst borrowing books, families can also benefit from the wide range of free activities we’re running in all our libraries throughout the holiday period. .
