A takeaway’s manager and former directors have been ordered to pay thousands of pounds after a routine inspection uncovered serious food hygiene breaches.

Ken’s Takeaway on Broad Street in Pensnett, was inspected by environmental health officers in October 2024, who found "extremely poor" standards of cleanliness and maintenance throughout the premises.

Issues included heavy grease and standing water beneath the wok range, leaking pipework, and a lack of hygienic hand-drying materials at the wash basin.

Suba Kiran, a former director of the company with previous food offences at the premises, pleaded guilty to six food hygiene offences and was prohibited from participating in the management of any food business. She was fined £846 and ordered to pay £838 in costs.

Fellow former director Maria Waqaz and then-manager Waqaz Parvez also pleaded guilty to all offences. Each was fined £200 and ordered to pay £500 in costs.

Councillor Daniel Bevan, Dudley Council’s cabinet member for development and regulation, said: "Food businesses have a legal responsibility to maintain high standards of food hygiene and cleanliness to protect the health of their customers.

"The conditions identified during this inspection fell significantly below the standards we expect and which the public has every right to expect when purchasing food.

"Our environmental health team works hard to support businesses in meeting their obligations, but where serious breaches are identified, we will not hesitate to take appropriate enforcement action.

"This prosecution demonstrates our commitment to protecting consumers and maintaining confidence in food businesses across the borough."

The total combined penalties amounted to £3,084.

The case was heard at Dudley Magistrates' Court on 12 August.

The takeaway has since improved and was rated 'generally satisfactory' and given a three-star hygiene rating on August 8 last year.
