PEOPLE in Dudley are being invited to a free quiz, cuppa and chat event this month as part of a campaign encouraging residents to make time for friendship before winter.

Black Country Oddfellows will hold the social gathering at Toby Carvery, Burnt Tree Island, Tipton, on Tuesday, September 22, from 11am to 12.30pm.

The event will offer people a chance to meet others, take part in a friendly quiz and enjoy a chat over a drink. Free parking is available on site.

It forms part of Friendship Month, which runs throughout September.

Black Country Oddfellows is encouraging people to maintain old friendships and make new connections before the darker evenings and colder months lead to fewer opportunities to socialise.

The organisation said a recent survey found that 62 per cent of people had lost touch with a good friend because they stopped meeting in person regularly.

Karen Phillips, social and publicity organiser for Black Country Oddfellows, said: “Summer is often full of opportunities to get out, meet people and spend time with friends and family.

“But as winter approaches, many people find they have fewer social plans and can start to feel isolated. That’s where groups like ours can help. We provide easy routes to meet other local people.”

Black Country Oddfellows runs regular activities and meet-ups across Dudley, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Wednesfield and Aldridge.

Kim Goodhead, from Wolverhampton, joined the group after looking for ways to meet people and try shared local activities.

She said: “I’ve made some great friends through the Oddfellows. The group has given me companionship, confidence and a real sense of belonging. It’s important to always have something to look forward to in your diary.”

Dr Anna Machin, an evolutionary anthropologist and a friend of Oddfellows, said regular face-to-face contact helped friendships grow stronger.

She said: “Friendships need regular contact to thrive. The key is consistency, regularity and proximity. As winter approaches, making time for regular catch-ups can make a significant difference to your wellbeing.”

Dr Machin will host a free online friendship webinar at 7pm on Tuesday, October 13, offering practical advice on making and maintaining meaningful friendships in later life.
